Hispanic Education Parent Fair
An educational fair for Hispanic students and their parents

The Hispanic Education Parent Fair is an initiative of the NCSHP to promote and disseminate information on the benefits of formal and higher education among the Hispanic youth of North Carolina.  This event is focused on reaching out to the parents of Hispanic Students in Noh Carolina in order to provide them with the tools and information to help their kids through school and encourage them to pursue higher education.

This initiative is intended to create an event where Hispanic parents can learn about the educational system, higher education and how to become involved in their children’s education. It is important to send the message to stay in school to parents as well as students. Parents are the facilitators and potential driving force behind the motivation of students.

The Hispanic Education Parent Fair is intended for Hispanic parents, students, and children who are interested in how to better their life and their child’s life through education.

Parent Fair Objectives:

  • Inform Hispanic parents of North Carolina of the importance of staying in school and the importance of a college education
  • Equip Hispanic parents with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the NC School System and keep their child on the path to college
  • Provide training and resources on household methods and practices that can be used to supplement student learning and therefore improve academic success

Fair Highlights

Session topics for the Fair include but are not limited to:

  • How to help your child to read
  • School policies (absences, suspensions, etc.)
  • Type of Courses in High School and graduation requirements
  • Persons available at schools to help your child (counselors, assistant principal, etc.)
  • How to set up an e-mail account to have access to your children grades
  • After-school activities
  • How to read your child grades and GPA
  • Gang awareness

Feature Presentations

Panel Discussion on College Admission/Course Requirements (English) – This workshop will discuss admissions requirements for North Carolina Central University, Meredith College and Wake Technical Community College as well as highlight the differences between public, private and community college admissions processes. 

Early and Middle College - How to Earn College Credit in High School (English)  - This workshop will explain how you can earn college credit BEFORE you get to college. 

Early College – Cómo obtener créditos universitarios en la Preparatoria (Español) – En este taller se explicará el programa “ Early College” y cómo usted puede obtener créditos universitarios antes de llegar a la universidad.

Como Navegar el Sistema Escolar (Español) – En este taller se explicará a los padres y alumnos cómo navegar el sistema escolar en Carolina del Norte, explicara a los padres a involucrarse en la educación de sus hijos y explicar cuáles son sus derechos dentro del sistema escolar.

Panel de Discusión sobre Admisión a la Universidad / Cursos Requeridos (Español) -

En este taller se discutirán los requisitos de admisión para la Universidad de Duke, la Universidad de Carolina del Norte y Durham Technical Community College, así como resaltar las diferencias entre los sectores públicos, privado y comunitario procesos de admisión a la universidad.

Financial Aid Options for College, including FAFSA (English) – This workshop will explain financial aid options for college, including FAFSA and scholarship options.  

Opciones de ayuda financiera para la universidad, incluyendo FAFSA (Español)En este taller se explicará las opciones de ayuda financiera para la universidad, incluyendo FAFSA y opciones de becas.

Páguese Usted Primero Este taller ayuda a los participantes a identificar las maneras en que pueden ahorrar dinero y presenta las opciones de ahorro que les ayudarán a alcanzar sus objetivos. Después de  este módulo, los participantes podrán: Explicar por qué es importante ahorrar, establecer objetivos para ahorrar dinero, determinar qué opciones de ahorro los ayudarán a alcanzar sus objetivos de ahorro, enumerar maneras de ahorrar para grandes gastos, incluyendo: la matrícula universitaria de un hijo, la compra de un automóvil o una casa, o unas vacaciones.

How To Find A Job (English) – This workshop will cover how and where to look for jobs, what to expect, preparing for an interview, what posture to keep during an interview, information about resumes, cover letters and applications, and more.
